The Art Gallery of NSW and the Australian Chamber Orchestra remember and pay tribute to Mr Weiss, who has died in Sydney, with a special performance. Music and art were two deep passions for the renowned businessman and philanthropist, who was among the first supporters of the Gallery’s Foundation and was appointed a Life Governor of the Gallery in 2009 in recognition of his generosity.
In this performance, Richard Tognetti and Satu Vänskä of the Australian Chamber Orchestra perform at night in the Gallery with The English Channel 2015, the monumental sculpture by contemporary Māori artist Michael Parekōwhai which was acquired with funds provided by Mr Weiss – one of several significant acquisitions for the State collection that he was instrumental in supporting.
Mr Weiss’s legacy will also live on in the Gallery’s expansion, the Sydney Modern Project, where a generous gift will fund a major artwork. His distinguished services to the arts, in particular orchestral music, were recognised in 2013 with an Order of Australia.
