Thomas Cooper Gotch

My crown and sceptre

1891
oil on canvas
Purchased 1899

I’ve been coming to the Gallery since I was a toddler. It’s my refuge, my place of joy. I have many paintings that I revisit. This is my latest favourite.

The serenity draws me in. Her expression is peaceful and she seems very content. The golden colours in the background create a warmth that reminds me of the autumn sun. And the red in her crown is picked up in her necklace and opulent sash.

Is this girl a princess of nature? With the beautiful flowers in her bouquet and crown, the bamboo-like sceptre, and the autumnal colours, I think so! I’d love to join her in her game of dress-up.
